Heading to Auschwitz

Heading to Auschwitz. Christi and I have been students of the Holocaust for many years. To be present in a place of such catastrophic evil is a profoundly difficult experience, but one that must be faced to fully comprehend what humans are capable of.

The specifics of the evil that created the Holocaust was centuries of simmering enmity towards the Jewish people, poor science in the belief in the essential importance of Eugenics, charismatic, authoritarian leadership, removal of checks and balances on the government (including silencing the media, academics and anyone critical of the government), the inaction of the people and an efficient and expert bureaucracy.

As Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel stated,

The opposite of love is not hate, it’s indifference.

We need to speak out when we see racism or any form of subjugation based on dissimilarity.

To love another is to accept another. To love another as God does, is to accept them unconditionally.

May we love without prejudice.
