The poor and the needy

Psalm 41
1 Happy are they who consider the poor and needy!
the LORD will deliver them in the time of trouble.
2 The LORD preserves them and keeps them alive, so that they may be happy in the land; *
he does not hand them over to the will of their enemies.

Reflection: Just one question, what are you doing for the poor and the needy? How might you help those who are struggling?

  1. Where does the line get drawn when it comes to helping someone who says they “need” something? I live in an area where there is a great need to assist those less fortunate. When I say “less fortunate” I refer to the elderly and disabled on a fixed income who often rely on food pantries and benevolence assistance to pay an electric bill in the cold of winter because their income isn’t enough to meet their basic needs. There are also many who will portray the image of being in need but ask for money for other reasons.

When someone approaches me asking for money to buy cigarettes or alcohol I tell them no. I tell them I can pray with them. But I will not provide money to support their habit.

Is it wrong as a Christian to not give money for “vices”? Personally I don’t think it is wrong. In offering prayer it opens the door to share Christ if they are open to receive. Whether or not the person accepts prayer is on them.
